ABOUT DEBORAH HITZ

Deborah Hitz is a visual artist whose work is grounded in close observation and a quiet reverence for the natural world. Raised on a farm in central Pennsylvania, she began drawing and sculpting as a child, inspired by the animals, fields, and seasonal rhythms around her. A formative visit to the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. awakened her to the wider world of contemporary art and affirmed the deep, enduring value of creative expression.
She went on to study fine art in Philadelphia, where she immersed herself in drawing, painting, and the dialogue of a thriving artistic community. After graduation, she moved to New York City, working as a studio assistant and forming close ties with fellow artists who shared her commitment to a life of making and meaning.
Since 2000, Deborah has lived and worked in Ulster County, New York. Her current practice centers on oils—both oil paint and oil pastel—through which she explores light, form, and atmosphere with sensitivity and depth.
She continues her artistic development through ongoing study at the Woodstock School of Art and has exhibited her work in both New York City and the Hudson Valley. Her pieces invite a sense of stillness and intimacy, offering viewers a chance to return to what is often overlooked.
